Trey Rangel's 16-K Complete Game Gem Lifts The Colony Past Frisco Wakeland 1-0
Senior night produced one of the more complete individual performances of the high school baseball season. The Colony's Trey Rangel — a former bobblehead award winner and one of the program's most decorated players — authored a masterpiece against Frisco Wakeland, striking out 16 batters and surrendering just one hit in a 1-0 Cougars victory.
For three innings, Wakeland's Michael Mueller gave the Wolverines their best chance at a breakthrough. Mueller lined a double into the gap to put a runner in scoring position, and later reached third base — only to be thrown out attempting to steal home, keeping the game scoreless through three. After that, Rangel locked in and didn't look back.
Wakeland's Will Vetkoetter matched the intensity on the other side, punching out 10 Colony hitters and keeping the Cougars off the board through five innings. The scoreless duel stretched deep into the game before Rangel settled the matter himself. Leading off the bottom of the sixth, he drove a pitch to deep left field for a solo home run — the only run either team would score all night.
Rangel returned to the mound in the seventh and struck out the side to close out the complete-game one-hitter. The 1-0 final sends The Colony into the postseason on the strength of a performance that was equal parts dominant and efficient — 16 strikeouts, one hit, one run, all on senior night.
