Keller Wins First Ever 6A-DI State Baseball Championship Over Lake Travis
Fifty-plus years of Texas high school baseball history were made when Keller claimed its first-ever state championship, topping Lake Travis in the 6A Division 1 final in a tightly contested, low-scoring game that came down to the final out.
Tennessee commit Cole Keninger was the story on the mound. Pitching through an injury that kept him out of the batting order, Keninger was sharp from the first inning on, giving Keller the kind of performance a program needs when everything is on the line.
Keller drew first blood in the opening frame when Brock Burkett came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Maximus Segura. The 1-0 lead held deep into the game, with Lake Travis pitcher Cooper Webb providing one of the defensive highlights — a diving catch on a bunt attempt by Bodie Davis in the fifth inning, followed by a quick throw to double off the runner at first.
The Indians pushed the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth when Carson Lesley grounded to short with the bases loaded. Lake Travis recorded one out but couldn't complete the double play, allowing the run to score.
Connor Davenport came on in the bottom of the seventh to close it out. After surrendering a run, he induced a dribbler to first base for the final out — and with it, Keller had its first state title in program history.
Head Coach Rob Stramp, who guided the Indians to the championship, is set to retire following the season, making the victory a fitting send-off for a program builder who never won bigger than he did in his final game.
