Melissa Sweeps Highland Park Out of Playoffs Behind Cullen Scott's Dominant Pitching
A playoff series that began with promise for the Scots ended at Scotland Yard, where Melissa completed a sweep with a 3-1 victory over Highland Park in Game 2.
The Cardinals struck first in the top of the first inning when Cullen Scott drove a ball to right field. Drew Chapa raced around third and slid safely at home to give Melissa an early 1-0 lead.
Scott's impact extended beyond his offensive contribution. On the mound, he dominated Highland Park's lineup for five-plus innings, surrendering just one hit and keeping the Scots off balance throughout his outing.
Melissa added to its lead in the third inning when Easton Granger scored on a passed ball, pushing the advantage to 3-0 after three frames.
Highland Park mounted a threat in the sixth inning, loading the bases with just one out. Charles Brewer hit a sharp grounder up the middle that appeared destined for center field, but shortstop Cam DeFury made a diving stop and turned an unassisted double play, doubling the runner off second base to end the inning and preserve the Cardinals' lead.
The 3-1 final sent Melissa forward in the playoffs while ending Highland Park's season with the sweep.
