Marcus Edges Coppell 3-0 in Pitcher's Duel to Clinch 5-6A Playoff Spot
A playoff berth was on the line at Flower Mound Marcus, and the Marauders delivered when it mattered most — beating Coppell 3-0 to claim the fourth and final postseason spot out of the highly competitive District 5-6A.
The game stayed scoreless into the second inning before Cole Schott broke it open, calling his shot to the opposite-field alley to plate Jackson Beugler and give Marcus a 2-0 lead. From there, the night belonged to the pitchers.
Coppell's Zander Montgomery, an Oregon commit, was sharp — freezing hitters with a sharp curveball and holding Marcus to just four hits over four and a third innings. But junior Michael Killian was sharper. The Marcus right-hander struck out six of the first nine batters he faced, setting the tone for what became one of the area's more dominant pitching performances of the season.
With Marcus still clinging to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Jameson Mayfield stroked an RBI single to left field to push the advantage to 3-0 — enough cushion to close it out and secure the win. The final score stood at 3-0, punching Marcus's ticket to the playoffs.
