Lovejoy Baseball Advances to Area Round with 6-5 Win Over Whitehouse
With Grapevine eliminated from the playoffs, Lovejoy emerged as the heavy favorite in Class 5A Division 2. The Leopards validated that status Friday night, outlasting Whitehouse 6-5 in Game 2 of their playoff series to advance to the area round.
Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Lovejoy's offense came alive. Lucas Smith drove a ball to right field that sent Brady Sommers to third base. When Sommers spotted an errant throw, he bolted for home to tie the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Reed Blakely slapped a hit to left field, allowing Carson Branch to motor around and score. The three-run inning gave Lovejoy a 3-2 advantage.
Whitehouse answered with power, launching home runs throughout the night. Gavyn Goates crushed a mammoth shot in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Leopards regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on Wildcat errors to go up 5-3 before Tanner Brown's inside-out swing sent the ball past the diving first baseman for another run, extending the lead to 6-3.
Whitehouse homered twice more in the final innings, but Tyler Scarborough closed out the game with his 14th strikeout of the night, securing the 6-5 victory and sending Lovejoy to the area round.
