Fort Worth Christian Falls in Heartbreaking State Final After Rain Delay

May 28, 2026
Fort Worth Christian lost the D-2 state baseball final 4-3 to Lutheran South Academy, falling in their eighth state title attempt after a five-hour rain delay.

Eight tries. Eight losses. Fort Worth Christian's pursuit of a state baseball championship remains unfulfilled after a gut-wrenching 4-3 defeat to Lutheran South Academy in the TAPPS D-2 state final.

The Cardinals looked poised to end that drought. Behind arguably the nation's best high school baseball player in Grady Emerson, Fort Worth Christian built a 3-0 lead through five innings. Jake Parkerson got things started in the first, ripping a hot shot down the third-base line that took a wicked hop past the fielder and scored Griffin Carney. Emerson added to the lead in the fourth, lining a shot to second that deflected off the fielder's glove and brought Hunter Hampton home.

Then came the rain — and five hours of waiting. When play resumed, Lutheran South Academy was a different team. The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, then walked off with the title in the seventh on a Richard Jones single, completing one of the more stunning reversals in recent state final history.

For Fort Worth Christian, the loss stings not just because of the lead that slipped away, but because of what the program has built. Emerson's presence alone draws national attention, and the Cardinals had every reason to believe this was their year. Instead, they head home 0-for-8 in state championship appearances, left to wonder what might have been without the delay.
