Byron Nelson Volleyball Extends Win Streak to 79 Straight in 5-Set Thriller

Seventy-nine straight wins. That number tells you everything you need to know about the Byron Nelson volleyball program heading into this season — and a five-set battle with Flower Mound tested every bit of it.

The Bobcats entered as two-time defending state champions, led by setter Sophee Peterson, a Texas A&M commit who has become the engine of one of the most dominant runs in Texas high school volleyball. But Flower Mound came out with a different script in mind. Junior outside hitter Aleah Edmond, committed to Grand Canyon University, was a force early, delivering powerful kills as the Jaguars took Set 1 25-20 and Set 2 25-21 to put Nelson in a serious hole.

Peterson responded in Set 3, putting the team on her back and finding gaps in the Flower Mound defense — including a deft touch shot dropped into the corner — as the Bobcats clawed back to take Sets 3 and 4 and force a decisive fifth set.

Set 5 was back and forth. Flower Mound's Caitlyn Axton delivered a thunderous kill in front of a diving Bobcat defender to keep the Jaguars alive, but Nelson answered with a key block to swing momentum. With match point on the line and the Jaguars serving, a KC Chinnis kill attempt sailed out of bounds, ending the match and sending Byron Nelson to 79 consecutive wins to open a new season.
