Red Oak Makes History With a 10-0 Regular Season
Football practice at Red Oak in the second week of November hasn’t been the norm around here for quite some time. A decade ago they went back to back season with no wins and had only 5 wins in the next 2 years combined. Just 2 years ago, the Hawks finished 2-8. And now….here they are….a 10-0 district champion who, going into Friday, was only 1 win away from tying a school record for victories. Quite a remarkable turnaround indeed. Coach Melvin Robinson is trying to create this tradition at Red Oak in just his first year as head coach. All his players agreed to follow Coach Robinson’s vision, but it took a nationally televised overtime victory over Lake Belton on the road to truly get them to believe an undefeated season was in the works. Success has come from a defense that allows only 14 points per game and athletes in the skilled positions. 3 players on the Hawks offense were members of last years 4x100 state championship team. That includes the coach’s son, Brayden Robinson, who, along with Taz Williams, are arguably the fastest wide receiver duo in the state. Another positive for the Hawks is that they’re doing this in their own community. In the past, Red Oak, because of their poor record, had become “poaching grounds” for stronger programs in the area.
