Over 1,400 assists in a single season. Back-to-back state championships. Gatorade National Player of the Year. For Byron Nelson setter Sophee Peterson, the numbers tell part of the story—but the position she plays was never designed for the spotlight.
Setters rarely show up in the stat lines that fans remember. No kills, no aces—just the quiet architecture behind every big swing. Peterson has not only embraced that role, she has redefined what it looks like at the high school level. Her coach puts it plainly: she is the best player in the nation, and the Gatorade selection committee agreed.
Peterson's reaction to winning the national award was telling. She had set her sights on the Texas honor alone, given the depth of talent across the state. When she walked into school and saw the national recognition waiting for her, she described it as being "truly mind blown." Her coach was not surprised at all.
The Southlake-area Bobcats return in 2026 as a younger group, and Peterson has stepped into a leadership role that extends beyond the court. Her younger sister Saddee is also a setter on the roster, giving Sophee a direct mentorship opportunity she has taken seriously—coaching her hard while building what she calls a core bonding moment between them.
Peterson recently returned from representing Team USA in Nicaragua and will graduate early in December before enrolling at Texas A&M. But before she leaves, there is unfinished business in November. Byron Nelson is chasing a three-peat, and their senior setter is not ready to hand that goal over to anyone.
