North Crowley's Tommy Brakel: DFW Boys Basketball Coach of the Year

July 1, 2026
Tommy Brakel led North Crowley to a 35-3 record and a 2nd state title, earning DFW Boys Basketball Coach of the Year honors with a career mark of 828-163.

Thirty-five wins, three losses, and a second state championship banner. That's the résumé Tommy Brakel built at North Crowley this season, capping it with a 65-52 victory over San Antonio Brennan in the UIL state title game.

Brakel has spent all 28 years of his coaching career with the Panthers, compiling an all-time record of 828-163—a winning percentage that places him among the UIL's top 100 basketball coaches in history. His reach extends well beyond Fort Worth: he has coached at the McDonald's All American Game and represented the country at USA Basketball Global Games.

For building one of the most consistent programs in Texas high school basketball and delivering North Crowley its second state title, Brakel is the DFW Inside High School Sports Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
