Walnut Grove Wins Back-to-Back 5A Golf Titles, Highland Park Takes Second
A one-stroke margin separated Walnut Grove from a second consecutive UIL 5A state golf championship at Legacy Hills Golf Course in Georgetown. The Wildcats entered Tuesday's final round with a three-stroke lead and posted a one-under-par team score to hold off a charging Highland Park squad that shot the day's best round at even-par 288.
Highland Park qualified two teams to the state tournament and placed second and third overall behind seniors Gray Gale and Jeffrey Rubinstein. The Scots' strong finish wasn't enough to catch Walnut Grove, as Randall sealed the team victory with a birdie on the 18th hole. His approach shot set up a two-putt that clinched both the team title and individual gold medal with a two-day total of seven-under-par.
In 6A competition at Lake Whitney's White Bluff Resort, Dallas Jesuit finished just off the podium in fourth place with a combined score of 28-over-par. Southlake Carroll placed sixth, while Flower Mound Marcus finished eighth. Junior Jonah Fahrenbruch of Jesuit was the top North Texas individual finisher, posting a two-day total of one-over-par for eighth place overall in his first state tournament appearance.
