Denton Guyer's Zane Rowe Finds His Edge at the Water's Edge
At South Lakes Park in Denton, there are no blitzes to diagnose, no ball carriers to chase down. For Denton Guyer defensive end Zane Rowe, that's exactly the point.
Rowe is one of the most disruptive defensive players in 6A Division II, a relentless edge rusher who also contributes at tight end on offense for the Wildcats. But a teammate introduced him to fishing during his freshman year, and the hobby stuck. Now, three times a week during the playoff stretch, Rowe heads to the water with a rod and reel to reset.
"I found enjoyment in it — it's just the peace," Rowe said. "I come out here just connecting with nature. You just kind of get to think about your thoughts, get away from football, get away from school, home, or whatever it is."
Guyer is pushing toward a deep run in the 6A Division II playoffs, and Rowe has been managing a foot injury that is expected to be healed in time for the postseason. His teammates describe a player who brings 110 percent every snap on the field while remaining one of the most easygoing personalities off it.
"On the field, he's going to bring that energy every single time," one teammate said. "Off the field, he's just very cool to be around, always happy, always smiling — a very caring person."
After his senior season wraps up, Rowe will head to Eugene as a four-star commit to the University of Oregon. He's already done his research on what awaits him in the Pacific Northwest. "There's a river right outside where I'll be standing my freshman year," Rowe said. "I will be fishing all the way in Eugene all the time."
