Life Oak Cliff's 3A Lions Are Scoring 52 Points a Game and Chasing First Playoff Berth Since 2019
Just off Interstate 35 East heading into South Dallas sits a small 3A school that most DFW commuters have passed without a second thought. This fall, Life Oak Cliff is worth a long look.
The Lions have won seven of their first eight games behind an up-tempo offense averaging over 52 points per contest, putting them on the doorstep of their first playoff appearance since 2019. Head Coach Welton Johnson is doing it with a roster of roughly 35 players—a number so lean that many of his current contributors have been seeing varsity action since their freshman year.
That early exposure has produced some of the most productive young skill players in the DFW area, even if Life Oak Cliff hasn't always been the final destination. Damarion "Champ" Mays caught 68 passes for over 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman with the Lions before moving on to North Crowley, currently the top-ranked team in the state. A year later, Sukora Cooper posted 21 touchdown scores in his freshman season at Life Oak Cliff and is now a versatile weapon for Frisco Panther Creek. Johnson has watched both players thrive at larger programs without bitterness—a reflection of the relationships he builds with his athletes.
The season hasn't been without turbulence. A 105-point output against Bonham generated a wave of social media criticism directed at the program. Johnson stepped forward and absorbed the backlash himself, shielding his players from the fallout.
For a program operating with limited numbers and modest resources, Life Oak Cliff's 2024 run is a legitimate story—one built on continuity, early development, and a coach willing to stand in front of the storm.
