Byron Murphy & Shemar Turner Return to DeSoto to Give Back

Two of the most decorated defensive linemen in DeSoto Eagles history made their way back to campus last month, and it wasn't for a reunion — it was for the kids still grinding through the same hallways and weight rooms that shaped them.

Byron Murphy and Shemar Turner, both products of DeSoto High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, returned just before NFL training camp opened to spend time with current players and pour back into a community they say never stopped believing in them. Murphy, selected 16th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2024 NFL Draft, went on to win a Super Bowl and compiled nearly 200 career tackles and 19 sacks during his college career before turning pro. Turner followed a year later, going in the second round of the 2025 draft to the Chicago Bears after a dominant senior season at DeSoto that included 84 tackles and 11 sacks.

For both players, the visit carried real weight. They spoke directly to DeSoto's current roster about mindset, faith, and the kind of daily discipline that separates players who make it from those who don't. Turner pointed to the program as the foundation everything else was built on — the work ethic, the drive, the way you carry yourself off the field. Murphy echoed that, crediting DeSoto with developing his character as much as his game.

The two also reflected on what it meant to push each other during their overlapping time as Eagles, feeding off each other's confidence and competing side by side every day. That shared history made the return visit feel like more than a photo opportunity — it was a message to the next crop of DeSoto stars that the path is real, and someone who walked it is still watching.
