West Mesquite Dominates Crandall 52-28, Eyes District Title
A 31-14 halftime lead was just the beginning. West Mesquite turned a comfortable cushion into a statement win Friday night at Memorial Stadium, pulling away from Crandall 52-28 and positioning themselves to clinch the district title the following week.
Quarterback Jason Bailey capped a late first-half drive with a rushing touchdown to push the Wranglers' lead to 17 heading into the break. Crandall showed some life in the third quarter when wide receiver Jeremiah Douglas hauled in a 61-yard reception, setting up a touchdown catch a few plays later to trim the deficit. But West Mesquite answered immediately.
Running back Damarian Robinson broke through the line, made a pair of cuts in the backfield, and turned it into a 46-yard gain that set up another Wrangler score, pushing the lead to 45-21. When Crandall needed a scoring drive to stay alive, the West Mesquite defense had other plans. Sa'Majai Jordan stepped in front of a pass and returned the interception 49 yards for a touchdown, effectively ending any hope of a Pirates comeback.
The Wranglers finish the night at 52-28 and enter next week's matchup with a district championship within reach.
