Second Baptist Stuns Carter in OT Thriller | Reece Alston Forces Overtime
College coaches were watching. SMU head coach Andy Enfield and Houston's Kelvin Sampson were both in attendance, and they got their money's worth.
Carter dug out of a 12-0 hole in the first half, with Shaq Kizzee knocking down a long-range shot off a pick-and-pop and the 6'11 big man showing range that turned heads. Amarion Hunter added a deft hand-switch layup in the lane to cap the comeback, and the Cowboys led 28-26 at the break.
Hunter kept rolling in the second half — absorbing contact and still finishing — to push Carter's lead to seven points. It looked like the Cowboys were in control. Then Reece Alston woke up.
Alston, considered by many to be the top player in Texas, hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three with under a minute left. Carter answered when Kaiden Eason threw down a two-handed stuff to push the lead back to 54-51. But Alston wasn't done — he drained another three to tie the game at 54 and send it to overtime.
Under showcase rules designed to keep games on schedule, overtime is sudden death — first bucket wins. A Carter guard dribbled the ball off his foot on the opening possession, and Aaron Smith converted the resulting layup at the other end. Second Baptist 56, Carter 54.
