The Cooldown- Week 19

Another week of district play has come and gone and there are just three weeks left in the regular season for the women and four weeks left in the regular season for the men. That breaks out to roughly six district games left for each girls hoops squad and eight district games remaining for the boys. Needless to say, we’re approaching crunch time across the metroplex as teams fight for playoffs spots and seeding. Now, let’s recap a few pivotal games from last week.

Kimball takes down Carter

Last week we ran through some of the top ranked teams across the metroplex in each division. In 4A, two of the top three teams reside in the same district. One out of Dallas Kimball and Dallas Carter will likely finish as a top three team in the state, despite not winning a district title. Kimball took the first step to securing the District 11-4A title with a 63-51 win over Carter on Friday night. In the end, Jaylon Dean-Vines was too much for Carter to handle. Dean-Vines absolutely stuffed the highlight reel in this game with a deep three and several rim-rocking dunks on his way to 20 points on the night. I recommend checking out the highlights below to check out several of Dean-Vines’ best highlights from the night. Dean-Vines got plenty of help from his teammates in this one, of course, including 14 points from Kayden Gray. For Carter, Terrell Jackson and Amarion Hunter led the way with 14 points and 11 points, respectively. There will be a rematch between these two teams in February and Carter will need to focus on not letting the score get too out of hand in the first half. The Cowboys competed well in the second half, but ultimately couldn’t make this one interesting at the end. Learning as much as possible from the loss will be key for Carter, as Kimball stands in the way of a district championship, and likely a trip to San Antonio, for the Cowboys. For now, Kimball continues to look like the team to beat in 4A once again.

Frisco Heritage beats Frisco Independence in OT

The No. 8 ranked team in 5A, according to the TABC poll, Frisco Heritage outlasted Frisco Independence 65-54 in overtime. The Coyotes outscored the Knights 15-4 in the extra period to make the score look a tad more comfortable than it actually was. Cameron Lomax led the way for Frisco Heritage with 25 points, 5 assists and 5 steals. Bryson Howard chipped in 17 points and Garrett Shelton nearly gave Frisco Heritage a third scorer in double-figures with nine points. Christian Cox and Kylan Wade led the way for Frisco Independence with 17 points each and Matt Laurant added 10 points in the loss. Lomax and Howard also had big performances on Tuesday night in Frisco Heritage’s 71-58 win over Frisco Emerson. Lomax finished with 29 points and 8 rebounds while Howard put up a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Frisco Heritage is now 7-0 in district play, though two of those seven wins came in overtime. The Coyotes also had a close call against Frisco Memorial back in December. Frisco Heritage faces Frisco Memorial again on January 21 and takes on Frisco Independence once more to cap off district play on February 11.

Denton Guyer takes down Flower Mound

On the girls side, one of the most anticipated matchups of the week was No. 5 Denton Guyer’s showdown with No. 7 Flower Mound, and the game didn’t disappoint. Denton Guyer won a thriller over Flower Mound 43-42 to improve to 7-1 in district play with the lone loss coming to Flower Mound back in December. Destanie Green led the way for the Wildcats in this one with 10 points. Peyton Underwood scored 8 points, Amaya Langford chipped in 8 points, and Baylee Bowman and Audrey Mitchell scored 5 points apiece. For Flower Mound, Maci Pringle scored a game high 15 points, followed by Addison Gray with 13 points, and Brooklyn Gray and Lorelei Ebert with 5 points each. Denton Guyer and Flower Mound are done playing this season, but both teams have a game remaining against No. 8 Denton Braswell left in district play. Denton Guyer picked up its eighth win in district play on Friday night with a dominating 63-36 win over Coppell. Baylee Bowman led the way with 21 points while Madison McGhie contributed 12 points and Peyton Underwood scored 9 points.

Player of the Week

My Player of the Week is Frisco Heritage’s Cameron Lomax! As outlined above, Frisco Heritage went 2-0 last week with an overtime win over Frisco Independence, and Lomax stuffed the stat sheet in both wins. In Tuesday’s win over Frisco Emerson, Lomax finished with 29 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. In Friday’s win over Frisco Independence, Lomax scored 25 points and chipped in 5 assists and 5 steals. Frisco Heritage is one of the top 5A teams in the state, and the Coyotes will need Lomax to continue putting up big numbers as the season goes on.
