The Cooldown- Week 20

The Cooldown- Week 20

The last week of January is upon us and the playoffs are right around the corner. Playoff spots and seeding are on the line for the women, who tip-off the playoffs in two weeks and have just three district games remaining, and for the men, who tip-off the playoffs in three weeks and have five district games left on the schedule. With that perspective, we’ll take a look at some of the best teams across the metroplex, as well as some of the most important matchups as it pertains to the playoffs. Let’s recap a few of the best games from last week. *All TABC Top 25 Rankings updated as of January 20.*

Denton Braswell takes down Flower Mound

The Lady Bengals defeated Flower Mound 58-50 on Friday night despite trailing entering the fourth quarter. A 20-5 run in the final period powered Denton Braswell to another key district win, keeping it tied with Denton Guyer in District 5-6A. The Lady Bengals aren’t out of the woods yet as it pertains to a district title. Denton Braswell hosts Denton Guyer on Tuesday, February 4 in what figures to be the district title game. The winner will get the No. 1 seed in the district and seemingly the slightly easier path to San Antonio, depending on how the rest of the bracket shakes out. Makayla Vation led the way for Denton Braswell, stuffing the stat sheet with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Dara Itata added 13 points and Amaya McDonald chipped in 9 points. Ytaly Lewis and Hannah Wilsone each scored 7 points for the Lady Bengals in the win. Maci Pringle led the scoring effort for Flower Mound with 20 points. Maya Bujak scored 12 points and Addison Gray chipped in 10 points as those three made up for the majority of the points scored by Flower Mound. With just a few weeks left in the season, Denton Braswell is still ranked as one of the best teams in the state, checking in at No. 6, while Flower Mound is listed at No. 8 in the TABC Top 25. Yes, that does mean that District 5-6A has three of the top 10 teams in the entire state. Talk about a district championship meaning a little bit more to the team that wins it!

Flower Mound Marcus defeats Denton Guyer

Keeping it in District 5-6A but moving over to the men’s side, Flower Mound Marcus upset No. 9 ranked Denton Guyer 53-51 in an absolute thriller. It was sophomore Colton Nussmeier who scored the game winner at the buzzer to lift Marcus past the Wildcats. It was a key win for a talented Flower Mound Marcus squad as it swept both district matchups with Denton Guyer thanks to this win. That puts the Marauders in the driver's seat for a district title. Jayden Ramnanan was spectacular, scoring a game high 31 points. Colton Nussmeier was the next leading scorer with 8 points, none of those points more important than his game winning bucket. Luke Susko scored 7 points and Jackson Penn added 5 points. For Denton Guyer, Jordan Lowery led the way with 23 points. Mason White scored 13 points and Tyler Copes added 9 points for the Wildcats in the loss.

Highland Park beats Frisco Wakeland

Moving it back over to the women’s side, Highland Park stunned No. 3 Frisco Wakeland 42-38 on Friday night. In a defensive struggle, the Lady Scots were able to overcome a halftime deficit by out-scoring the Wolverines 16-4 in the third quarter to a four point lead to the final frame. An even 13-13 scoring output in the fourth quarter powered Highland Park to the narrow win. Kate Danner led the way for the Lady Scots with 14 points while Ellington Heis added 11 points. Tyler Corwin chipped in 9 points and Palmer Jones contributed 6 points in the win. Madison Epps led Frisco Wakeland in scoring with 14 points, matching Danner’s point total. Kyla Stengle scored 7 points while Kaylei Thornton added 6 points in the loss. Frisco Wakeland took the first matchup between these two squads 56-53 and, despite the loss on Friday night, Frisco Wakeland still leads Highland Park by a game in the district standings.

Player of the Week

My Player of the Week is Melissa’s Austin Goosby! Melissa went 2-0 last week with wins over Anna and Denison. In the win over Denison, Goosby went for 28 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists! Just a rebound shy of a 28 point triple-double, Goosby has provided impressive performances for Melissa all season long. Goosby recently surpassed 1,500 points for his high school career and will need to continue stuffing the stat sheet if Melissa is to make a deep playoff run and play into March.
