The Colony Clinches Final Playoff Spot with 20-10 Road Win Over Grapevine
Playoff positioning in Class 5A Division 2 doesn't get much tighter than this. The Colony traveled to Grapevine needing a win to stay alive in the postseason race — and delivered one of their most complete performances of the season.
The Colony wasted no time establishing control, jumping out to a 14-0 lead behind a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Jaylon Gaines, who kept the ball himself on a decisive early carry. Grapevine tried to cut into the deficit before halftime, moving the ball through the air with quarterback Kye Smith connecting with Ermoni Sandifer, but The Colony defense held firm and forced a field goal, sending the teams to the locker room at 14-3.
The score stayed the same deep into the third quarter — until head coach Rudy Rangel dialed up a misdirection play that caught the Grapevine defense completely off guard. Tremayne Barton took the handoff, found nothing but open field, and rumbled 48 yards untouched to push the lead to 20-3. Grapevine added a late score to make it 20-10, but The Colony closed it out for the road win.
The victory moves The Colony into the final playoff spot in their district with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
