Richland 42, Wakeland 7 | Gibson Rushes for 128 Yards in Rebels' Dominant Win

Wakeland's first game as a 6A program ended in a tough lesson, courtesy of a Richland Rebels squad that looked every bit the part of a team ready to make noise this season.

UCLA-bound running back Jayshon Gibson set the tone early, punching in a short touchdown run on Richland's opening possession to put the Rebels up 7-0. He never let up, finishing with 128 rushing yards and two scores on the night.

Through the air, Richland was just as efficient. Quarterback Brett Kates — another son leading the way for head coach Jed Kates — completed 17 of 23 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Ben Sanders for one of the highlight grabs of the evening.

Wakeland had chances to get back in it, reaching the Richland 1-yard line just before halftime with one play remaining, but the Rebels' defense held firm and kept the shutout intact heading into the break. That goal-line stand proved symbolic of the night — Richland's defense was a wall whenever Wakeland threatened.

The final score, 42-7, wasn't a surprise by the end. For Wakeland, the step up to 6A competition brought a swift reality check. For Richland, it was a statement opener.
