Linebacker Payton Pierce is Back for Lovejoy after Missing his Junior Year with Hamstring Injury
If you’re attending a Lovejoy football game, it feels like the only time you don’t see number 26 on the field is when you’ve stepped out for popcorn. Payton Pierce’s primary position on the Leopards is linebacker. As a sophomore he made 131 tackles, 6 sacks and forced 5 fumbles. That’s the definition of a playmaker. Primed for even more eye popping numbers as a junior, Pierce missed almost the entire season with a hamstring injury. Lovejoy still wound up with an 8-4 season, but Payton’s absence on the field was very noticeable What he learned during his time on the sidelines is what Coach Chris Ross has known his entire career. Payton Pierce, like his older brother Oliver who played at Allen, is a Swiss Army Knife. Plug him in anywhere and he’ll perform. Lovejoy is one of the favorites to go to state in 5A Division 2 and the play of the future Ohio State linebacker is a main reason why. Pierce has already won a state championship in wrestling, but his desire for a football title is what is motivating him this fall.
