Edwards Rushes for 4 TDs as Lake Ridge Edges Lake Highlands 44-38
A 9/11 tribute honored before kickoff set a somber tone, but once the ball was in the air — and on the ground — this one turned into one of the more electric games of the young DFW high school football season.
Mansfield Lake Ridge quarterback DeShawn Edwards was the difference-maker, carrying the ball for 236 yards and four rushing touchdowns while adding a fifth score through the air. The Eagles built a 24-7 second-quarter lead before Lake Highlands stormed back to tie the game at 24 heading into the third quarter.
Fueling that comeback was Lake Highlands signal-caller John Cothern, who finished with 461 passing yards and five touchdown strikes. Wide receiver Conrad Ince — pronounced with one syllable, "INse" — hauled in four of those scoring passes, giving the Wildcats every chance to pull off the win.
But Lake Ridge's ground game proved too much to contain. The Eagles went up by two scores twice in the fourth quarter, and while Lake Highlands answered each time, they could never fully close the gap. The final: 44-38, Lake Ridge.
With the victory, Mansfield Lake Ridge moves to 2-1 on the season. Lake Highlands falls to 1-2.
