Duncanville Pantherettes State Title Recap - 2013 Basketball

03/09/13

Pantherette coach Cathy Self-Morgan, whether she wanted to admit it or not, had all the pressure on her team's shoulders. When you've won 69 in a row and are ranked #2 in the nation, you are expected to win. Which is why she looked to seniors like SMU bound Kiara Perry to harbor the load early against an upset minded Cibolo Steele squad. Perry would gladly answer the bell as on the Pantherettes first possession, she knocked down the mid range jumper and got Duncanville off to a good start. Tamara Washington would then throw Perry the lob and key key would bank that one in. She finished off the 1st quarter with a drive to the rack for 2 more and Duncanville led 11-6 after 1. 2nd quarter, Pantherettes step up their defensive pressure. Tasia Fo-Man causes the turnover and goes the other way for the basket. Finally Washington drives the lane and dishes to Perry for the baseline jumper. Perry scored 13 of her 20 points in the first half and Duncanville led 32-14 at the break. 3rd quarter, off the missed shot, junior star Ariel Atkins goes coast to coast, fakes the pass and puts in the layup. She scored 13 points. Perry would then finish off a M-V-P game by knocking down the 3 ball. She's all smiles and why not. Duncanville becomes the first repeat 5-A champion since Mansfield won four in a row starting in 1999. They win this one 59-36. And next year's team will bring back Atkins and Fo-Man, who both verbally committed to texas after the game. As for the 70 wins in a row, Self-Morgan is quick to point out her predecesor, Sandra Meadows, won 134 straight games. So she has her work cut out for her. With a lot of this year's talent coming back next year, look for Duncanville to make a run at a 3rd straight title
