District 7-5A Division II Preview: Timber View, Heritage Lead Loaded Field

Speed is the story in District 7-5A Division II this season, and Mansfield Timber View has more of it than anyone else in the field.

Timber View enters the year as the consensus favorite, and the reason starts with a name DFW football fans will recognize. Terrence Shaw, the former NFL cornerback, has two sons — Tristan and Tyranny Shaw — both projected at wide receiver and both already generating recruiting attention. Add Braylen Barnett to the mix and quarterback Stephen Hall has no shortage of weapons. The defense returns frontline talent with size and athleticism, even if depth is a concern. Coach Coleman has steadily built the program, and with a more favorable playoff bracket — no longer drawing District 3 or 4 in the first round — Timber View has a cleaner path to a deep postseason run.

Midlothian Heritage slots in at number two but faces a significant rebuilding challenge after graduating heavily. Brian Newman steps in at quarterback, Charles Lee transitions from tight end to linebacker, Wyatt Wagner is drawing offensive line offers from multiple programs, and Luke McCain anchors the defensive side. Heritage has the size to compete but may lack the team speed to match Timber View in a head-to-head matchup.

Arlington, under Joe Vaughn, comes in at number three. The program consistently punches above its weight despite sitting near the bottom of Division II enrollment numbers. Replacing Kevin Andrews is the key offseason question, but Kadarius Trotter gives the offense a focal point, and Khalil Brown at strong safety anchors the defense. If Arlington keeps it simple and feeds Trotter, another playoff appearance is well within reach.

The battle for the fourth and final playoff spot figures to be one of the more competitive races in the area. Ennis holds the edge at number four thanks to Coach Drake's defensive identity — Damien Bowser, Elijah Parker, and Aiden Jones form a formidable defensive line — though the offense needs to be rebuilt after heavy graduation losses. Joshua comes in at five after moving down from Division I, bringing a slot-based offense that could catch opponents off guard week to week. Corsicana rounds out the contenders at six; Kevin Pointer is entering his third year in the system and appears ready for a breakout, with C.J. Davis at receiver and Keenan Murphy at running back giving the Tigers legitimate weapons. Burleson is ranked seventh and Everman eighth to complete the district.
