Denton Guyer Tops Melissa 27-9 in Top-10 Cross-Classification Showdown

September 14, 2026
Class 6A Denton Guyer defeated Class 5A Melissa 27-9 in a top-10 Texas matchup, with Carter Morgan and DJ Reese leading the Wildcats offense.

Two of Texas's top-10 teams met across classification lines — Class 6A Denton Guyer against Class 5A Melissa — and the Wildcats made the talent gap clear with a 27-9 victory.

Guyer quarterback Carter Morgan got things started in the first quarter, tucking the ball and scoring on a 3-yard run to put the Wildcats up 7-0. The second quarter brought a brief momentum shift when Morgan was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety that trimmed the deficit to 7-2 for Melissa. But Morgan quickly answered, finding wide receiver DJ Reese for a 17-yard touchdown just before halftime. Reese finished the night with 13 catches for 156 yards — a dominant performance against a quality opponent.

Melissa found life in the third quarter when a fumbled snap by Guyer gave the Cardinals a short field, and Jeremiah Tabor punched it in on the first play of the possession to make it 17-9. The Cardinals had a chance to make it a one-score game, but a fumbled punt return swung momentum back to Guyer for good. On the very next play, nose tackle Khyren Haywood — showing unexpected open-field speed — scored to push the lead to 24-9 and effectively end the contest.

The final score of 27-9 gives Denton Guyer a signature non-district win, while Melissa will look to regroup within Class 5A competition.
