The Cooldown- Week Two

We made it through week two! That means 5A and 6A are just three weeks away from kickoff. In fact, 5A and 6A schools were allowed to hit the field this morning to begin preparations for the season. I should also shout out all the 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A schools that are doing it right. Continue to wear masks and social distance whenever possible and we should hopefully make it through to the end of the season. With that being said, let’s dive in to two games from last weekend and take a look at my preseason 5A top ten.

Argyle vs Pleasant Grove

Argyle made a statement with a win over Pleasant Grove last weekend. C.J. Rogers was spectacular once again as he passed for 252 yards and five touchdowns in Argyle’s 52-41 victory. Pleasant Grove didn’t go down without a fight but will need to improve if another state championship run is in the cards. That improvement should come as the season moves along and some younger guys get more experience. With all that being said, Argyle is looking dangerous early this season. I will have my eyes on the Eagles, especially when they take on Waco La Vega in a few weeks.

Midlothian Heritage vs Lindale

Midlothian Heritage and Lindale was one of the better games in the area last weekend with Heritage coming out on top 28-21. This game was dominated on the ground but Heritage quarterback Daelin Rader did have a good night through the air, passing for 141 yards and a touchdown. Cullen Stone rushed for 83 yards and two scores for Heritage and Jordan Jenkins carried the load on offense for Lindale, rushing for 157 yards and a score. I will be keeping my eyes on both of these teams moving forward.

5A Top Ten

  1. Denton Ryan Raiders
  2. Frisco Lone Star Rangers
  3. Aledo Bearcats
  4. Highland Park Scots
  5. Red Oak Hawks
  6. Lancaster Tigers
  7. Frisco Independence Knights
  8. Mansfield Timberview Wolves
  9. Frisco Raccoons
  10. South Oak Cliff Golden Bears

The addition of quarterback Chris Parson landed an already talented Red Oak squad at No. 5 on my list. I think there is a clear-cut top three, but the rest of the list was hard to put together. All ten of these teams are talented and will be a threat in the playoffs. I am looking forward to watching these teams play this season!
