The Cooldown: Week 25

It’s playoff time in Texas once again! The football State Championships wrapped up a month ago, but the women kicked off playoff basketball last week, and the men will follow suit this week! It will all culminate in San Antonio about a month from now with the basketball State Championships. It all starts this weekend for the men while the women will start moving through the middle of the playoffs with rounds two and three this week!

Plano outlasts Coppell in Overtime

Plano needed a win against Coppell on Saturday to keep its season alive. Regelation wasn’t enough to decide a winner, but the Wildcats prevailed over the Cowboys 57-53 in overtime. Makhi Dorsey led the way with 16 points and Xavier Williams added 13 points. Robert Hall also scored in double figures with 12 points. Coppell’s usual three-headed monster scored most of its points with Nazir Brown leading the way with 24 points. Ryan Agarwal finished with 15 and Anthony Black added 11.

Plano isn’t firmly in the playoffs yet though. The Wildcats will have a play-in game on Tuesday against Hebron to decide the last playoff spot in District 6-6A. Coppell and Flower Mound Marcus tied for the District Championship with Lewisville taking the other playoff spot.

Timber Creek eliminated L.D. Bell

The Keller Timber Creek women eliminated L.D. Bell from the playoffs thanks to a 43-38 win and a 12-2 fourth quarter score. Mia Topping and Theresa Kailahi led Timber Creek with 12 points each, and Deja Lumsden added eight points. Hallie Rhodes led the way for L.D. Bell with 18 points while Macey Mercer added 10 points.

South Grand Prairie caps perfect regular season with win over Lamar

South Grand Prairie topped Arlington Lamar 51-46 to complete an undefeated regular season. The Warriors will be one of the handful of favorites to make a run to San Antonio and play for a State Championship. Jordan Roberts and Khaden Bennett had 18 points and 17 points, respectively, on Friday night. Those two will lead South Grand Prairie through the playoffs, which start this Friday for SGP against Richardson Pearce.

Player of the Week

My player of the week is Mesquite Horn’s Jasmine Shavers! The Mississippi State signee dropped 40 points in Horn’s first round playoff win over Garland and also scored 27 points against Tyler Legacy on Monday. If Mesquite Horn makes it to San Antonio, Shavers will be a big reason why!

Team of the Week

My team of the week is the Plano Wildcats! It’s tough to beat the top team in district with a playoff spot on the line. Plano prevailed over Coppell to extend its season to Tuesday and a play-in game against Hebron.
