The Cooldown - Week 12

DFW - Week Twelve

The bi-district round of playoffs has come and gone, and we are on to the area round! That means there are just five weeks left in the high school football season. It’s time to recap the bi-district round and preview the area round!

Flower Mound Makes History

Flower Mound won its first ever playoff football game last Friday night. Flower Mound High School opened its door in 1999. Let’s take a look at some historical context. Friends and E.R. were two of the most popular shows on television in 1999. Jeff Bezos (shout out Amazon) was named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Toy Story 2 were two of the biggest movies. I want It That Way by The Backstreet Boys was one of the most popular songs. Midland Lee defeated Aldine Eisenhower 42-21 in the 1999 5A DI Championship Game. Midland! Lee! It’s been that long!

It took a late game-winning drive for Flower Mound to pull it off too. The Jaguars led for most of the game, but Keller scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Indians missed the PAT attempt of the last touchdown and held a 30-24 lead with just a few minutes remaining. Blake Short found Reid Touchstone in the end zone with :10 seconds remaining, and Flower Mound is on to the area round for the first time in school history!

Kaedric Cobbs Powers Guyer to Area Round

Denton Guyer defeated Hebron 50-30 at Children’s Health Stadium but the game was much closer than the final score appeared. Guyer scored two late touchdowns after clinging to a 37-30 lead late in the game.

It was Kaedric Cobbs who powered Guyer to the win. Cobbs rushed for 245 yards and five (!!) touchdowns. Eli Stowers added a passing touchdown of his own to go with 166 yards passing and 74 yards rushing.

Denton Guyer will take on a good Cedar Hill team at AT&T Stadium on Saturday at noon. The winner of this game has a good chance to win Region I. There’s a lot of great talent in this game and I highly recommend making it out to AT&T this weekend for some playoff football!

Two to Watch

I just mentioned Cedar Hill and Denton Guyer being one of the better matchups in the area this week but let’s take a look at some of the other top games in DFW.

DeSoto vs Southlake Carroll

This one is an early start. Kickoff is at 4:30 on Friday afternoon at AT&T Stadium. Southlake Carroll is the favorite in this one but don’t sleep on DeSoto. The Eagles flew past Skyline 44-6 in round one. Southlake Carroll had the most dominating round one performance of any DFW squad, beating Lewisville 84-6. Southlake Carroll is probably the biggest threat to Duncanville in Region I but I still expect Duncanville to make the state championship game.

Allen vs Rockwall

The sequel to DeSoto vs Southlake Carroll at AT&T Stadium on Friday is Allen vs Rockwall. It really is the most wonderful time of the year. Rockwall tested Allen in a shootout in the playoffs last year but fell just short. This year, there are some new faces. Raylen Sharpe took over as quarterback when Grant Tisdale graduated. Sophomore Braedyn Locke filled in at quarterback for Rockwall. Will Allen win round two or will Rockwall pull off the upset? Be at AT&T Stadium at 8:00 on Friday night or follow along with us on Twitter @ihss_dfw to find out.
